modern family, interrupted

pablo won't eat unless i sit with him. unless i'm rubbing his back and whispering that it's okay, that no one is behind him, that his kibble will still be there if he trots around for a bit. some time in the past, some long ago forgotten memory is lying latent in him. the awful idea that someone might take his food, hit him for eating, or try to nudge him out of the way of the bowl. i'll never know what happened to him those five years he wasn't mine.

but i do know how it is now. how i can't sit down to watch modern family without him nudging me, reminding me he is hungry. i've sat on the floral linolieum in that old farmhouse every single night for the past two years. i've learned the crevices of the squares, the intricate pattern of the sage green and buttercup yellow motif.

but it's a good thing, this being needed. being depended upon. even if it's just by a 13-pound ball of fluff. and when babies come to bless our days, as i pray they do, i'll feel just an inkling more prepared. it's ironic. all this time on the cold hard kitchen floor, and i've become softer.

poor little guy. My pup is the exact opposite. If he sees food he cant wait to gobble it all up and then turn around and whimper for more. He is such a fatso.

My mommy in law's dog can't eat unless she's close to him either.. She had him since he was a pup... What happens if you guys go on vacay? Have you ever left him behind? How does he fare?

How sweet! My lab Lucky won't eat unless I sit with him too. I have to encourage him and talk to him or he just won't eat. My husband's dog is the exact opposite. She eats as though we will never feed her again!

Aww! Rudy is similar - not to this extreme - he I have to be in the same room with him for him to eat, otherwise, if I walk out of the room he is done eating. Silly little dogs! ;)

This is beyond the sweetest thing I have read all week. My boyfriend works for the ASPCA so I hear stories daily about abused animals. It warms my heart more than you could know to see so much love being given to a formerly abused dog.

Thank you <3

Beautiful post. Animals have a way with us, we'll always have a soft spot for them. Dogs make such great companions, Pablo is no different.

This is so sweet. We also adopted a shelter dog who had a horrible former life and I often wonder what is going on in her brain when she is nervous or scared. I'm not sure I do as good a job nurturing her as you do, though. You are such a good doggie mama!

That last line kills me. Please release a book. That is so sad that something happened where he cannot eat alone, poor baby. I just want to cuddle him!

How perfect is Pablo!! Pets are just plain adorable aren't they... you're so right about the babies though.. I think pets make you soft enough to get by life the way you articulate it in the last line is JUST PLAIN GORGEOUS. Poetic! Couldn't have ever said it better myself
