bangs of old

last week was terribly long. i survived on iced coffees. that the last week of summer school happened to collide with the week of this year's Largest Proposal at work, was a cruel coincidence.

so on tuesday, when i couldn't bear the fact that the week still wasn't half over, i got bangs.

because i haven't had bangs since i was seven. and then, they were paired with a sweet side pony and an oversized pastel sweater with a unicorn motif. and that was for my school picture.

on this blog, i advocate doing whatever it is that makes you feel like you. like the best version of yourself. whether its a swipe of lipstick before running out the door. those high heels that cost a week's salary. reading your Bible by lamplight. as long as you feel authentically real, it's worth it, justified and logical.

but last week, i didn't really want to be me. at least  not the me i am now. not the girl behind the monitors. under the piles of schoolwork. frantically looking up MLA style online because for the life of me i can't remember.how.to.cite.my.sources.

i wanted to be the me of old. the me of seven years. with elementary graduation up ahead. still to discover the extra wide halls of the middle school. the wonders of high school. prom and college yet to be tackled.

so i reverted. and the crazy thing?

i feel more like myself now than ever before. maybe its the fact that i woke this morning to a hazy carolina sunrise. maybe its the sweet tea, not iced coffee, chilling beside me.

either way, it's good to be back.

You are such a cutie pie! I love the new look- very Parisian! It suits your beautiful spirit so well :) I'm so sorry these are stressful times for you... just remember to take deep breaths, and think about happy things, and remember that iced coffee will help you through.

P.S. I used to have an oversized unicorn sweater too! We could have worn them on twins day :)

it suits you so well! i've been itching to just lop my side bangs into a straight-across fringe, but, like you, i've not had those since i was about seven or eight. about once a month i get really frustrated and brush my hair forward into my eyes, gather all my bangs in my hand, scissors poised to chop, but then i talk myself out of it and wait for my next hair appointment. maybe next time i'll just go for it!

That's amazing how something so simple could be such a good reminder. I've had bangs nearly all my life -- except my senior year of college when I grew them out. I stayed bangless for a year or two, and when I finally cut them into my hair again, I appreciated them for the first time in my life. It was like coming home.

HEY So glad you stopped by so I could discover YOUR wonderful blog!! haha You are gorgeous by the way!

I loved this post. I have had so many bouts of not feeling like my authentic self.. simply because I often worry (as most of us do) about what other poeple think. I loved what you said about doing little things that make you feel like you. For me it would have to be sugar. Eating sugar makes me happy haha.. and when i first started working at a health food store.. I felt judged and guilty for my bad eating habits. Now I just shrug and say "it tastes good", and that seems to put the guilt to rest. Hehe.

P.S. Bangs suit you uber well! They were too much maintenence for me since I have cow licks and naturally wavy hair. *tear*

And I get wanting to go back to your old self sometimes. Sometimes it feels more...right.

you carry those bangs with such grace!

Sometimes, I can't assimilate the idea of adulthood. I feel like a child with responsibilities very often.

Aloha, Courtney :) I'm your newest follower from over on Angie's blog. Loved what you had to say about being a confident woman and pretty much everything else. "She has the courage to be kind, the confidence to be sweet and the self awareness to blend in." Love the way you're able to string the words together. So excited to read more of what you've written.

Also, the bangs? Fantastic!

After reading your most recent post I had to come find the post about your bangs... LOVE THEM!! Seriously, I can't have bangs like that 1. bacause I don't have lovely thick hair like that. and 2. because I couldn't pull it off. You look AMAZING! :D And your writing is simply beautiful. I've missed your blog!
