an open call for suggestions and travel tips

she is ready. after a few months of preparation, our new england road trip travel itinerary has been set. in a bulging one-inch binder complete with sheet protectors. i even broke out my special "birds edition" post it notes from anthropologie, the ones that cost as much as a new hardback book, for the occasion.

i've managed to condense the intricate details into very broad overviews of travel stops along our way, outlined below. we leave very soon!

and though the big plans are set, i've left a little room for adventure. for exploration. for back roads and little roadside diners. for spontaneity in a land unknown. the most fun we had on our west coast road trip last year was at midnight in a denny's near fort bragg, california.

**post edit: i totally realize the ben & jerry's headquarters is in VT. we've got it planned that way. sorry for the typo!

and here's where you come in! please, please share your new england must-sees. i'd absolutely love to hear them. because though i'm from the east coast, bear in mind that i am from a small town that only recently got a stoplight and a wendy's. and growing up, we only went to myrtle beach, and as lively of a time as that is, i'm certain you guys could show me a better one!

I'm so happy you're coming to Newport, the history behind the small town is just amahh-zing. you should check out the mansions when you're there.

Also, the museum of natural history is one of my favorite places in NYC, it's absolutely enchanting. you should go by!

We just did the Newport Cliffwalk on our mini New England trip a few weeks ago - great choice. It's absolutely beautiful - you've got the ocean on one side, and enormous mansions on the other. Not to be missed!

If you have a couple extra hours while in Philly, I would recommend the Constitution Center (it's just a couple blocks from the Liberty Bell). It may just be the history nerd in me, but I love this place! Your tour starts with a theatrical performance that always leaves me in tears of how proud I am to be an American, and ends with a room filled with life-sized statues of all the signers of the Constitution (major photo op!).

Sounds like you have many, many wonderful things planned already!

I was all over New England in my younger days ;-D but for the life of me can't remember everything we did!! In Boston we rented roller skates and skated all around the Charles River and Cambridge. Do take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard. You can rent bikes there and see a lot of good stuff. Try to drive along the coast and see some of the seaside villages. Oh...I wish I were going!!

XO,
Jane

Hi there. Is that your handwriting on the notes?! If so, it is lovely ! I'm afraid I can't help you with this one, as I've never even been to America, although I would dearly love to go to New England in the Fall. I shall have to rely on you instead! Don't forget to take lots of photos for us all to see.

it looks like you have a pretty great list! i used to live in bangor, maine. bangor is a super fun city full of bookstores {stephen king lives there}. my favorite places there was in the wilderness country up north, and acadia national park. but really, i think anywhere you stop along the coast will be great. pretty much any town you come across will have a pretty light house and plenty of delicious seafood. that's been my experience really with most towns in upper new england - there will be some pretty sights, delicious food, and plenty of history. i'm so excited for you!!

super fun!! Being from new jersey apple picking is an absolute must! Atlantic city might be a little barren and if you arent into gambling, you might not get what all the hype is about but theres some great resturants there and the jersey shore is beautiful, you might like ocean grove, lots of cute little shops and this tent city which is kind of famous http://oceangrove.org/pages/tentcity

Dearest Courtney,

I have missed reading your blog so much, and reading it again brings tears to my eyes.

I am so sorry I couldn't keep in touch these past months. I felt so hurt that I was so afraid of getting back into being a part of the blog world.

I truly hope you will have a wonderful time traveling.

Much love,

Anna

I don't have any but must say you are the travel notebook queen. You should publish them.
I would LOVE to go on this trip. It's still so hot here in Phoenix that a fall trip where leaves are changing and the chill is in the air sounds divine.
Safe travels.

I spent a summer in Quebec, and the entire time I was there I kept thinking, "Vermont! Am so, so close to Vermont! I must go down there..." But did I? No. I wish I had. New England is on my list of dream destinations. And so, I'm very jealous of this roadtrip you've got planned. Happy for you. But jealous!

Have an amazing time. I can't wait to hear all about it.

Queechee VT! And when are you going to be in Cape Cod? The Wellfleet Oyster fest is Oct. 15th and 16th and TO DIE FOR.

Oh my gosh! That's going to be so amazing! Philadelphia is only like an hour and a half from Baltimore, where I live, and it would be so amazing if you drove through! We could get a chocolate croissant! I guess we are technically not New England but we are tons of fun! And the Ben and Jerry's factory would be AMAZING- I have always wanted to go there!
