you could fry an egg, or your mind

this week has just about done me in.

july has almost reached its capacity, and as we nose forward, inching minute by minute toward the heat wave masquerading as august, these last few days have been exhausting.

i've stared into too many screens and too few sunsets. i've spent way too much time in my car and not enough on my front porch swing. i found myself almost crawling through the front door last night, with just enough energy to lie on the hardwoods and let pablo sprawl all over me, his paws in my damp hair. school. work. volunteering. heck, even eating has seemed like a chore. thank goodness for summer and its light, simple meals.

i've given up this week on fixing my hair. curls deflate upon my first step outside. likewise, i've forgone eyeliner. even my usual lipstick has remained tucked in my mama's old floral change purse, deep in the abyss of my pocketbook. if nature is going to rear itself so heavily, in such a desperate show, i'm going to reciprocate by airing my natural self.

but yesterday, while waiting on a friend, i pulled out that tube of lipstick. and gave myself a quick swipe. and sitting in my car, with the a/c on full blast and my hair pulled back, i swear i felt...dare i even say it?...cool. as in less hot, not in terms of swagger.

it's a funny thing, this weather. i curse and  bless it all in the same breath. but thankfully, if i can depend on anything, it's that this weather will turn. and give way to snow showers and rainy mornings. hands stuffed in mittens and cheeks chapped with chill. and i'm not quite ready for that just yet.

so i soldier on. with sweaty hair and melted half-makeup and a tired, sleepy mind that just wants to sleep. in a cool room with a fan. for about 50 hours. yes, that would be enough.

haha! I am so ready to feel that kind of heat! I miss it! Being in Alaska during the Summer is awesome! If it were a little warmer it'd be perfect. :)

I am ready for fall! I enjoy summer for about one month, and then I'm ready for fall. I agree with you- my energy is zapped in the summertime. I feel so tired when I get home. It might be humidity, which makes me feel like I'm swimming everywhere. But yes, I am ready for fall. :)

It isn't funny how during the winder we want summer to come? we miss the warm beach days and wish we could exchange the snow for heavy rain, then summer comes and here we are, all of us or most of us --daydreaming about cozy days in, dreaming of a cold place, cold enough to turn on the oven and bake without feeling like the house is going to become a friend egg.

Even though I appreciate the heat (sometimes),I tend to wish these kind of things a little bit too often

Hi my friend. I really do feel for you having to cope with the heat that you have. And it's going to get hotter in August??!! If we make the low 70's (f), we feel we are doing really well!! Here's to cooler times for you.

Oh, summer. I do hope you find yourself a cool place to rest--and maybe kick back and read a good book. And I totally know about the crazy hair and no eye-liner...but for me it's because of kids! ;)

We're a cool 70 degrees, and despite the rain, I prefer it to the hot summers of adolescence. I was a bit worried you were going to tell me that your quick swipe led to the end of the lipstick.

I'm with you! This heat is pretty awful, but I think for the first time, I've really made the best of it and just tried to enjoy summer and what it brings!
Ok so... did you make those cookies like that?

Ugh, we were in Missouri last week and it was so humid and AWFUL. I couldn't believe how much more I was hating the heat than in AZ! Glad you had a moment of "cool" :-)

at least you get to look forward to mittens, sweaters and cooler breeze... it's warm here all year (mostly!)

I curse and bless hot weather at the same time as well!! goodness you always have the most perfect way of describing things :) But even though it's unbearably warm at times, I need to soak up every bit that summer has left. Fall is just around the corner! xoxo

I hear ya! It's that part of the summer; the sleepy half-trance stage where you want so badly to start accomplishing but more than that, you just want to nap... until tomorrow! Here's to hoping August throws a little mercy your way (and mine too)! :)

Oh no, I hate when it gets too hot like that! I hope it gets a little cooler for you soon :)

That cookie picture is a classic! genius idea! I'm totally with you on forgoing the make up, it's been so hot here I feel like everything comes off within minutes of being outside anyway. I can't wait for fall so we can break out the bright lipstick again:)

i loved this so much. and i got so much more from it than the heat and summer. more that life itself is full of never-ending seasons. and while this particular one may seem unbearable and endless, nothing is permanent. and soon enough, colder winds will blow and the sun will set much earlier in the day and things will be new again. a new season. another place to start fresh. that's what makes life so dang beautiful. :)

It has been UNBELIEVABLE hot here too. My 3 year old doesn't even want to go outside and play... and that never ever ever happens!
