glory days.

"i always wanted to be on a sports team like that. i'm not exactly sure why, but i always thought it would be fun to have 'glory days.' then i would have stories to tell my children and golf buddies. maybe these are my glory days and i'm not even realizing it because they don't involve a ball. "
-the perks of being a wallflower

i was halfway through reading this book when it hit me.

maybe these are my glory days and i'm not even realizing it.

because they don't involve my own home.

they don't involve babies.

they don't involve the perfect career.

they don't involve a master's degree {yet}.

they don't involve a cure for my stutter.

but that's ok.

because these are my glory days. and i refuse to let another precious one slip by without grasping it. holding onto it and relishing it. one day these days will only be a memory.

whatever preconceived ideal our "glory days" seem to lack, makes them that much more glorious. because they're ours. and what a sad thought to think that mine might pass me by while i'm out looking for what it is i'm supposed to have, when everything i need is right.in.front.of.me.

but comparison is hard. and easy to fall into. i'm a daily victim. so, even if just for today, i'll try to focus on what makes my life glorious.

today it was listening to pearl jam on my way to work, chasing the sunrise. the surprise blueberry muffins my co-worker brought in. the sleepy kiss from robert on my way out the door. pablo's cold nose on my warm cheek.

love. that pretty much sums it up. love.

I heard a quote that runs along the lines of 'take notice of the small things for someday you may realize they were the big things'. You definitely got that right!

I love that book! I hope you enjoy it.

Lately I feel like I'm always rushing to the next thing instead of enjoying and savoring the current moment. Thanks for reminding me to love my life as it is right now...the good the bad the little and the big.

Love & hugs!

words of wisdom :) ...made me think of how we'll probably never feel that life is perfect (or remember to realize we're in the glory days) because lots of the time we're looking forward to something...always something. But we've gotta do what you did, see the beautiful in today and soak up every drop! And I love that you got blueberry muffins from a co-worker (surprise goodies at work are the best=)

PS - can i just say that, for a second, the quote reminded me of Napolean Dynamite's uncle (Uncle Rico)...have you seen that movie? classic, heehee;) But really, the quote is lovely :)

I came across a quote this morning that goes hand in hand in this, and made me think:
"Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things only hoped for." Epicurus
So, I too, am making the effort to be grateful for whats in front of me!

Your posts are so thoughtful as usual.

Gratitude is a life style and it comes with appreciating the present --> this is what I tell myself everyday, the more I repeat it, the happier I get. Not because I have learned to conform but because it makes me realize that I should be grateful for living this exact same moment.

Beautifully said and so very true. I think every day could be a glory day. Reminds me of a quote, I think it's Mary Engelbreits - "The Real Voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." Thanks for stopping by my blog, nice to meet you.

What a lovely post. I think they are all glory days...It seems every year, I am looking back at the years that have passed and remembering them not for their hardship the most, or what was lacking the most, but looking back and the little memories, or the instances that mattered in one small way. Kids will especially change this with you, yes, because they grow so fast, but I still do it about college...and when we were first married. Good post here. You've got me thinking this fine morning. Have a great, gloriuous day. xo

Wise words indeed, and the older you get, the truer they become. Every day is a precious gift to us, and that's why it's called the present.

My husband didn't start medical school until our first son was already born- It was such a long journey- we moved A LOT, he was gone A LOT and we had no money and just kept on piling on student loans with ever semester. I remember an aha moment where I realized that this WAS my life and that I couldn't keep on waiting for him to be finished before I felt like I could start.
I have felt really sad about Elizabeth E's passing- mostly because her youngest is only a year older than my oldest and I can't imagine him doing life without me- I woke up this morning determined to be happy. These are the glory days.

I love this you're so wise. We're always looking for that end of the rainbow but usually when we get there, it's the journey there that meant the most. So I guess we're living in the pot of gold right now :)

Such a lovely reminder to be grateful and present in our day-to-day moments! (I have a great friend who always reminds me that it's those moments that make up our lives). I struggled through a loong period in grad school, before I also had the epiphany that life doesn't start after, life is happening NOW! And I'm grateful looking back I had friends to treasure, and we all had a terrific time being war buddies in the grad school battle, that we had the freedom to structure our schedules without company deadlines all the time. Despite the horrible struggle of that time (will we have jobs, will we have enough money for next semester, will we ever finish this darn thesis), there was so much good. :)

Definitely a wonderful reminder. Thank you.

And I've always loved that photo series of you and Robert -- beautiful.

I SO needed this. Thank you. I always look to the past and ruminate on 'what was' instead of relishing in the here and now.

I will probably look back to this post often when I need that reminder.

Thank you for the reminder. I find myself lost in empty hope of things to come. I get caught up in the crappy job, little apartment, small bank account and not enough time in the day.

These are my glory days and i should embraces them for what they are, not for what they aren't.
