the one i feed

i read something in my devotional book this weekend that struck me. not just got me thinking, but suddenly aligned everything i've been seeking for in my walk with God and my search for truth:

from a native american faith tradition we receive the story of a grandfather telling his grandchild about spiritual struggle and growth. "inside me there are two wolves who fight each other all the time. one is motivated by peace, gentleness, honesty, justice and love. the other lives by resentment, bitterness, hate, anger and violence." "which one wins?" asks the child.

"the one i feed," answers the elder.

  3. This was so perfectly put. What we feed our mind or how we spend our time REALLY, REALLY affects our walk. Thanks for the encouragement!

  5. My friend, you and I are on similar wave lengths. Just recently I've realized that life is all about how you look at it (something I forgot) and what "side/wolf" you decide to feed and fuel. I hope you're having a happy start to the week!

  10. That was brilliant, and so very true. We all have the ability to feed the wolf we want to. Let us all try to feed the gentle, kind, honest one that is inside us.

  12. yes! this is a story i was taught in grad school and is pretty popular to use in therapy with clients. it's so true isn't it? and such a beautiful way of looking at life and growth. my professor even gave each of us a wolf head at the end of our time in graduate school to inspire us as we went out into the world as therapists. i'm so excited you read about it in a devotional!

  16. @melissa: this was actually a devotional/sermon series book called "five practices for fruitful living." it's a beautiful book about the power of community, fellowship and faith-sharing. you can find it here: http://www.amazon.com/Practices-Fruitful-Living-Robert-Schnase/dp/1426708807

  18. That's so true. I've been feeding the peaceful one. It's amazing how easy things are once you make a choice. The other never really goes away, but it won't win.
